How HoLEP Treats an Enlarged Prostate
HoLEP stands for holmium laser enucleation of the prostate. It is a minimally invasive laser surgery that treats benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition that enlarges the prostate and prevents urine from passing freely through the urethra. During HoLEP, Dr. Herrera reaches the prostate through the urethra, uses a holmium laser to separate the tissue blocking urine flow, and removes it. No external incisions are required.

Learn More About Dr. HerreraFAQ About HoLEP in Tijuana, MX
Is HoLEP a major surgery?
HoLEP is a minimally invasive laser surgery that has a lower risk of complications than other surgeries that treat BPH. No external incisions are required for HoLEP, as Dr. Herrera can access the site through the urethra. Measures will be taken to keep you comfortable during your HoLEP procedure.
How is HoLEP different from a simple prostatectomy?
Both treatments remove the tissue that is blocking urine flow and leave the rest of the prostate in place. The difference is the route. HoLEP uses a laser through the urethra. A simple prostatectomy requires an incision in the abdomen, though Dr. Herrera performs it laparoscopically whenever possible. He will recommend the best option for you during your consultation.
Do I need to stay in Tijuana after surgery?
This depends on your procedure and your health, and Dr. Herrera will give you a recovery and travel timeline at your consultation.
